荒波に潜る海女の身を包む、かすり半纏の深い「藍色」。そこから内陸へ向かうと、盛岡の城下町には南部藩の庇護を受けた「紫根染・茜染」の優美な色彩が息づいています。海と共に生きる力強い青と、職人が草木から引き出す高貴な紫と赤。大自然と歴史が織りなす岩手ならではの色鮮やかな伝統は、今も色褪せることなく人々の心を魅了し続けています。

荒ぶる波が岩礁を絶えず「侵食」するかのように鍛え抜かれた沿岸の藍は、海という大いなる力と交感する生命の証拠です。一方、雪に閉ざされる静謐な城下町で、幾星霜の時間が「堆積」するように染め重ねられた紫と赤は、内なる美を希求した人々の祈りの結晶と言えるでしょう。

波の飛沫に洗われる動の色彩と、冬の静寂の中で深みを増す静の色彩。一見相反するこれらは、岩手という厳しくも豊かな大地が織りなす曼荼羅の、鮮やかな糸にほかなりません。そのひとすじの美しい色に触れるとき、透き通った風の音とともに、幾世代にもわたる人々の息遣いが私たちの魂を静かに揺さぶるのです。

Connecting the Sea and the Castle Town: The Enduring Beauty of Japanese Colors

The deep indigo of the kasuri coats worn by ama divers reflects the powerful ocean. Inland, the elegant purple and red of Shikon and Akane dyeing thrive in Morioka’s castle town, historically protected by the Nanbu domain. Woven by nature and history, these beautiful traditional colors of Iwate continue to captivate our hearts today.

The indigo of the coast, tempered as if the raging waves continually erode the rocky shores, is a testament to human life communing with the immense power of the sea. Conversely, in the serene, snowbound castle town, the purple and red—dyed layer upon layer as if time itself has accumulated—are the crystallization of a prayer seeking inner beauty.

The dynamic color washed by ocean spray, and the static colors deepening in the silence of winter; though seemingly opposite, they are vivid threads of the mandala woven by Iwate’s rigorous yet rich climate. When we touch a single strand of these magnificent colors, the breathing of generations past gently stirs our souls, carried on the sound of the transparent wind.

Today, we invite you on a sensory journey that transitions from the vivid autumn leaves of nature to the noble, deep hues of “Shikon-zome” (purple root dye) passed down in Shiwa Town, and the exquisite sake brewed in that same land.
