岩手という土地は、宮沢賢治が愛した鉱物や地質学の知的好奇心を刺激する宝庫である。詩人であり農業指導者でもあった賢治は、大地を単なる土壌ではなく、時間の層が積み重なった「歴史の書物」として読んでいた。その視点を借りて岩手県北部の久慈を眺めれば、そこには9000万年前、白亜紀の息吹が現代と交差する特異な空間が広がっている。
The Geological Memory of Kenji Miyazawa
Iwate is a treasure trove for the geological curiosity that Kenji Miyazawa, the renowned poet and agronomist, held so dear. Miyazawa did not view the land simply as soil; he read it as a “book of history,” with layers of time stacked upon one another. Through his lens, one can perceive Kuji, in northern Iwate, as a unique space where the breath of the 90-million-year-old Cretaceous period intersects with the present day.
琥珀：地球が閉じ込めたタイムカプセル
久慈の地層は、日本国内でも極めて稀な琥珀の一大産地として知られている。琥珀とは、太古の樹木の樹脂が化石化したものだ。久慈の琥珀は、9000万年前の樹液が地中で熱と圧力を受け、硬質な宝石へと変貌を遂げた産物である。顕微鏡を覗けば、そこには古代の空気や昆虫が閉じ込められていることもある。それは単なる装飾品ではなく、地球の記憶を物理的に保存した「タイムカプセル」なのである。
Amber: A Time Capsule Sealed by the Earth
The strata of Kuji are known as one of the few major amber production areas in Japan. Amber is the fossilized resin of ancient trees. The amber of Kuji is the result of resin from 90 million years ago subjected to heat and pressure deep underground, transforming into a hard gemstone. Under a microscope, one might find ancient air or insects trapped within. These are not merely ornaments; they are “time capsules” that physically preserve the memories of Earth.
恐竜たちが歩いた湿地帯の残照
さらに、久慈の地層からは恐竜化石も発見されている。かつてこの地は、恐竜たちが闊歩する湿地帯や河川の氾濫原であった。発掘された歯や骨の化石は、この地がかつて多様な生物が共存する豊かな生態系であったことを物語る。賢治が『銀河鉄道の夜』で描いたような宇宙的な時間感覚を、久慈の地層に触れることで、我々は足元の土壌において体験することができる。
The Afterglow of the Dinosaur Age
Furthermore, dinosaur fossils have been excavated from the Kuji strata. This region was once a wetland and floodplain where dinosaurs roamed. The fossilized teeth and bones discovered here tell the story of a rich ecosystem where diverse life forms once coexisted. By engaging with the strata of Kuji, we can experience the cosmic sense of time that Miyazawa depicted in “Night on the Galactic Railroad”—not in the stars, but right here in the soil beneath our feet.
永遠を巡る巡礼
久慈という場所は、観光地としての消費対象ではなく、地球史という壮大な物語の一部を体感するための巡礼地である。賢治がかつて地層に感じた「永遠」という概念は、久慈の琥珀と化石の中に今もなお静かに眠っている。
何千万年もの時をかけて深く堆積した生命の記憶は、荒々しい太平洋の波風による絶え間ない侵食と、大地に向き合うひたむきな人々の手によって、いま再び太陽の下へと引き出される。地層に沈みゆくものと、削り出され姿を現すもの。その静と動の境界線に立つとき、私たちは自らもまた、悠久の時の流れに漂う一粒の砂に過ぎないことを悟るのだ。三陸の海鳴りを聴きながら、手の中の琥珀が放つ透き通った光を見つめれば、そこにはただの冷たい石ではなく、確かに脈打つ地球の鼓動が息づいている。

A Pilgrimage to Eternity
Kuji is not merely a destination for tourism; it is a pilgrimage site for experiencing a chapter of the grand narrative of Earth’s history. The concept of “eternity” that Miyazawa Kenji once perceived in the strata still sleeps quietly within the amber and fossils of Kuji.
The memories of ancient life, deeply accumulated and deposited over tens of millions of years, are now brought back into the sun’s embrace through relentless erosion by the rough Pacific winds and waves, alongside the earnest hands of those who face the earth. As we stand on the boundary between what is forever etched into the strata and what is carved out to reveal itself, we realize that we, too, are but singular grains of sand drifting within the eternal river of time. Listening to the roaring sea of Sanriku and gazing into the translucent light radiating from the amber in our hands, we do not feel a cold stone, but unmistakably hear the beating heart of the Earth.
