The deep indigo of the kasuri coats worn by ama divers reflects the powerful ocean. Woven by nature and history, these beautiful traditional colors of Iwate continue to captivate our hearts today.

The indigo of the coast, tempered as if the raging waves continually erode the rocky shores, is a testament to human life communing with the immense power of the sea. Conversely, in the serene, snowbound castle town, the purple and red—dyed layer upon layer as if time itself has accumulated—are the crystallization of a prayer seeking inner beauty.

The dynamic color washed by ocean spray, and the static colors deepening in the silence of winter; though seemingly opposite, they are vivid threads of the mandala woven by Iwate’s rigorous yet rich climate. Meanwhile, at Mitsuishi Shrine in Morioka City, an even more dynamic myth remains. Long ago, a demon named "Rasetsu" who terrorized the area was defeated by the power of a god. As a vow never to cause trouble again, he left his handprint on a massive rock. This "handprint on the rock" (Iwa-te) is the very origin of the prefecture's name.
